# Business development before your first sales hire: a founder’s playbook

What a founder should set up before hiring a salesperson: the customer profile, a pipeline with real stages, one outreach motion that works, a CRM people use, and the numbers that say when to hire.

Many founders hire their first salesperson to fix a pipeline that does not exist yet. The hire arrives to find no defined customer, no process and no data, and is judged a failure within months. Most of that can be avoided with work the founder can do, or install, first.

## 1\. Write down who you sell to

An ideal customer profile is a short description of the companies most likely to buy and stay: industry, size, region, the problem they have and who in the company feels it. Write it from your best existing customers, not from the ones you hope to win.

## 2\. Define the pipeline stages

Each stage should describe something the buyer has done, not something you hope for. For example: prospect, qualified, meeting held, proposal, negotiation, won or lost. Add the rule for moving a deal from one stage to the next. Without rules, a pipeline becomes a list of hopes.

## 3\. Prove one outreach motion

Pick one channel (LinkedIn, email, phone or partner introductions), one segment and one message, and run it long enough to see what happens. A motion that books meetings for the founder is what a salesperson can scale.

## 4\. Put everything in a CRM from day one

Every contact, meeting and deal belongs in the CRM; HubSpot, Salesforce and Pipedrive all work at this stage. The value is not the tool but the history: a new hire inherits context instead of starting cold.

## 5\. Measure a few numbers

- Pipeline value: what is in play, by stage.
- Qualified meetings a month.
- Close rate from proposal.
- Sales cycle length.
- Cost of acquisition.

## When to hire

Hire when you have a motion that repeats and more qualified meetings than you can run yourself. The first salesperson then joins a system: a profile, a pipeline, a channel that works and a CRM with history.

If there is no time to build it, GrowBD installs it end to end: research, outreach, pipeline, closing and CRM, with your sellers or ours, live within 30 days.
