# Generative engine optimization for startups. Be named when buyers ask AI.

GEO, generative engine optimization, gets a startup named and described correctly when buyers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude or Google’s AI Mode for what it sells. It matters early: in G2’s March 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B software buyers, 51% said they now start research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google, and one in three bought from a vendor they had never heard of. GrowAxis runs GEO with SEO inside GrowDigital, live within 30 days.

[How GrowDigital works](https://www.growaxis.net/engines/growdigital)

Built for founders who…

- …are new, and missing from AI answers about your category
- …sell to buyers who shortlist with ChatGPT or Perplexity
- …have no marketer yet, or one marketer doing everything
- …sell in more than one market or language

## What GEO for a startup includes

1. ### AI visibility audit
The questions your buyers ask, put to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google’s AI Mode, with the companies and sources each answer names logged as your starting point.
2. ### A site assistants can read
Crawler access for OAI-SearchBot and the other assistants, pages that read without JavaScript, structured data that matches the page, and an llms.txt summary.
3. ### Pages that answer first
Your main pages say what you sell and for whom in their first two sentences, backed by sources, quotes and figures.
4. ### One set of facts
The same name, description and facts on your site, LinkedIn, G2 and the directories your buyers use.
5. ### Mentions where assistants look
Reviews, comparison lists, partner pages, YouTube and community threads in your category.
6. ### More than one market
The same work in each language you sell in, Arabic, Dutch and French included.
7. ### Monthly AI check
The same questions asked every month, with how often you are named tracked over time, since single answers change from run to run.

## GEO for startups: the evidence, November 2026

Buyers start with AI

In G2’s March 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B software buyers, 51% said they now start research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google, up from 29% a year earlier. 69% picked a different vendor than planned because a chatbot recommended it, and one in three bought from a vendor they had never heard of.

What the GEO study measured

The 2023 paper that named GEO tested page rewrites on 10,000 queries. Citing sources, adding quotations and adding statistics raised a page’s visibility in AI answers by up to 40%; keyword stuffing did not help. Citing sources lifted pages ranked fifth in search by 115.1%, while the top-ranked page’s visibility fell 30.3%.

What goes with being named

Across 75,000 brands, mentions on YouTube (correlation about 0.737) and elsewhere on the web (0.656 to 0.709) were most closely linked to being named in ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews; the number of pages on a site barely was (about 0.194). Ahrefs notes that correlation is not causation.

Where AI looks

In 680 million citations from August 2024 to June 2025, Wikipedia was ChatGPT’s most cited source (7.8%) and G2 had 1.1%. Reddit led in Google’s AI Overviews (2.2%) and Perplexity (6.6%), with LinkedIn and Gartner in the top five of both (Profound).

What Google asks for

Google says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup are needed: crawlable pages, structured data that matches the visible text and up-to-date business details.

Measuring citations

Since 10 February 2026, Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report shows how often a site is cited in Microsoft Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries, and Search Console counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic under Web search.

Published prices

Sourcelift lists a $390 GEO audit (a founder rate until 31 December 2026), a $3,500 sprint for the first 90 days and monthly programmes from $900\. Gripped’s guide puts B2B SaaS retainers at £2,000 to £3,500 a month for companies with £2M to £10M in annual recurring revenue.

How long it takes

Pepper, which sells GEO to B2B SaaS companies, says first citations typically appear within four to eight weeks and gains build between months three and six. That is its own estimate, not a measured study.

## GEO services for startups: what founders ask first.

- ### What is GEO for a startup?
Generative engine optimization: making your company easy for AI assistants to read, trust and cite, so it is named when buyers ask them what to use. It builds on SEO, and it has nothing to do with geographic targeting.
- ### Is GEO worth it for a startup?
It can be, because many buyers now start with AI: in G2’s March 2026 survey, 51% of B2B software buyers began research with a chatbot more often than with Google, and one in three bought from a vendor they had never heard of. In the original GEO study, pages ranked fifth in search raised their visibility by 115.1% by citing sources.
- ### How much do GEO services cost?
Published prices vary widely. Sourcelift lists a $390 audit and monthly programmes from $900, and Gripped’s guide puts B2B SaaS retainers at £2,000 to £3,500 a month for companies with £2M to £10M in annual recurring revenue. GrowAxis prices GEO after the free growth assessment.
- ### Should a startup do GEO or SEO first?
Both, from one plan, with SEO basics first. Google says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. GEO adds one set of facts about your company and mentions on the sites assistants cite, such as Wikipedia, Reddit, G2 and LinkedIn.
- ### How long does GEO take?
Agencies’ own estimates run from first citations in four to eight weeks to steady gains after three to six months, and we found no independent study that measures it. GrowDigital puts the groundwork live within 30 days and checks the answers every month.
- ### How do I get my startup mentioned by ChatGPT?
Let OAI-SearchBot read your site, since OpenAI does not show sites that block it in ChatGPT search answers. Back your pages with sources, quotes and figures, and get named where assistants look, such as YouTube, G2, LinkedIn and Reddit. Then ask the same questions every month, since answers change from one run to the next.
- ### Where should a startup start with GEO?
Ask the assistants your buyers’ questions and log who they name; open robots.txt to their crawlers; rewrite your main pages to answer first, with sources and figures; use one set of facts everywhere; earn mentions where assistants look; then check the same questions every month.
- ### Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend us?
No. Assistants choose their own sources and their answers change. We make your site readable, your facts consistent and your company mentioned where they look, and we report what they say every month.
