How AI assistants decide which companies to mention

When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot for a recommendation, the answer draws on what the model learned and what it finds on the web. What makes a company likely to be named, and described correctly.

AI assistants name companies they can find, understand and trust. Some answers come from what the model learned in training; many now also come from a web search the assistant runs before answering. Either way, the companies mentioned consistently on sites the assistant reads, with clear pages that answer the question, are the ones that appear.

Where the answers come from

  • Training data: what the model read before it was released, which is why widely mentioned brands start with an advantage.
  • Live search: many assistants search the web through engines such as Bing or Google and summarise the pages they find, often with citations.
  • Direct fetching: some assistants open specific pages when the question needs it.

What makes a company likely to be named

  1. 01Pages that answer the exact question in their first sentences, in plain text.
  2. 02The same facts everywhere: name, description, location and services match across the site, directories and profiles.
  3. 03Mentions on sources the assistant trusts: reputable directories, industry articles, reviews and partner pages.
  4. 04Structured data and a clean, crawlable site, so search engines index the pages assistants rely on.
  5. 05Being in the indexes assistants use: verify the site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  6. 06Letting AI crawlers in through robots.txt, and offering llms.txt and Markdown copies of the pages.

What does not work

  • Hidden text, or pages written only for machines.
  • Stuffing keywords or brand names into content.
  • Buying links or reviews.
  • Claims you can’t back up: assistants increasingly cross-check sources.

How to check where you stand

  • Ask each assistant the questions your buyers ask, every month, and record whether you are named and how you are described.
  • Note which sources each assistant cites, then improve your presence on those sources.
  • Watch referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar sites in your analytics.
