Paid ads or performance marketing: what a small company should buy first
Paid ads buy attention on Google, Meta and LinkedIn. Performance marketing judges every channel by the leads and revenue it brings. The difference, which one a small company needs first, and how to start without wasting the budget.

Founders often ask for “ads” when what they want is customers. The two are related but not the same, and buying the wrong one is one of the fastest ways to spend a marketing budget without learning anything.
The difference, in one line each
- Paid ads: you pay a platform such as Google, Meta or LinkedIn to show your message to an audience you choose. It is a set of channels.
- Performance marketing: every channel, paid or not, is judged by what it brings in (leads, customers, revenue), and the money moves toward what works. It is a way of running marketing.
You can run paid ads without performance marketing, with clicks reported and nobody sure which of them became customers. And you can run performance marketing with little paid spend, with SEO and content measured against leads.
What a small company needs first
Measurement. Before the first ad runs, make sure a lead can be traced from its first click to the CRM, and that sales marks which leads were real. Without that, every report is about clicks, and clicks are what platforms are best at selling.
- 01Agree the numbers that matter: qualified leads, cost per lead, conversion rate and revenue.
- 02Set up conversion tracking, and pass the source of each lead into the CRM.
- 03Agree with sales what counts as a qualified lead.
- 04Only then choose channels.
Choosing channels
- Google search reaches people already looking for what you sell. For a service business it is usually the first channel to test.
- LinkedIn targets B2B decision makers precisely, at a higher cost per click.
- Meta (Facebook and Instagram) gives reach and visual creative. It is strong for consumer brands and for reminding past visitors.
Start with one or two channels, run them long enough to learn, and move budget each week toward the campaigns that produce qualified leads.
Red flags in any proposal
- Reports on impressions, clicks or reach, with no line for leads or revenue.
- No conversion tracking into the CRM before spend starts.
- Ad accounts you do not own, or cannot see.
- Guaranteed results.
GrowDigital runs paid ads inside a performance plan: tracking that reaches the CRM, one plan across paid and organic channels, and spend moved toward what converts, measured on qualified leads and cost per lead.
