“Small business lead generation” is one of the fastest-rising lead generation searches in the US: searches in the last six months were more than double those in the six months before (Google Trends, October 2026). Most small businesses do not need more channels. They need two or three that work, and a way to follow up on every lead.
1. Decide who you want to hear from
Write one paragraph on your best customer: the kind of business or person, the problem they have when they look for you, and what makes them buy. Every channel below works better when it is aimed at one clear customer.
2. Make the website your best salesperson
“Website lead generation” is rising too. Most enquiries start on your site, even when they arrive by phone. Give each page one clear next step, keep forms short, make pages load fast on a phone, and answer the questions buyers ask in the first lines of the page.
3. Show up in local and AI search
For a business that serves an area, a complete Google Business Profile, recent reviews and pages that name the places you serve bring buyers who are ready to act. More buyers now ask ChatGPT or Google’s AI Mode for a recommendation, and those answers draw on the same profiles, reviews and clear facts on your site.
4. Ask for referrals, on purpose
Happy customers are the cheapest source of leads, but few small businesses ask in a planned way. Ask when a customer is happiest, make it easy to pass your name on, and thank every referrer. Partners who serve the same customers, such as an accountant for a software company, can refer in both directions.
5. Use LinkedIn if you sell to businesses
LinkedIn lead generation is rising in the US as well (+110% among Google’s related searches). A clear profile, short posts on the problems you solve and personal messages to a short list of the right people work better than mass connection requests.
6. Try outbound in small batches
Cold email and calls can work for a small B2B business when each message is researched and relevant. Start with 50 well-chosen accounts, not 5,000 contacts, and follow the rules: in the US, CAN-SPAM requires an honest sender, a postal address and a working opt-out; in Canada, CASL generally requires consent first.
7. Pay for ads only when you can track them
Google and Meta ads can bring leads quickly, but only spend once every form and call is tracked into one place. Otherwise you cannot tell which ads bring customers and which only bring clicks.
Keep every lead
The most common leak is not a lack of leads but slow or missing follow-up. Put every enquiry, from forms, email, calls and messages, into one CRM, reply the same day, and set a reminder for every lead that has not decided yet. HubSpot and Zoho both have free plans to start with.
Mistakes that waste a small budget
- Buying lead lists that nobody researched.
- Running five channels at once instead of two that work.
- Judging marketing on likes and clicks instead of enquiries and sales.
- Leaving phone and message leads out of the CRM.
