Business development firm or first SDR: what to weigh

A first sales development rep and a business development firm both buy outreach and meetings. They differ in ramp-up, management, ownership of the playbook and flexibility. How to weigh the two, and the hybrid in between.

A first SDR gives you a dedicated person who learns your market and stays, but needs a playbook, a manager and time to ramp up. A business development firm can start sooner and brings a process, but may keep the know-how on its side. The deciding questions are who will manage the work, who owns the playbook and the data, and how sure you are of your market.

What to weigh

  • Ramp-up: a new hire needs time to learn the product and the market; a firm with a process can start sooner.
  • Management: an SDR needs weekly coaching; a firm needs someone to steer it.
  • The playbook: with none written down, a first SDR has to invent one; a firm may bring one, so check who owns it.
  • The data: outreach and pipeline history should live in your CRM either way.
  • Flexibility: a firm can scale up or stop more easily; a hire builds lasting capacity.
  • Market certainty: testing a new segment suits a firm; a proven segment suits a hire.

The hybrid

Many companies do both, in order: a partner installs the playbook, the CRM and the outreach and runs it until it works, and the first hire then joins a working system instead of starting from nothing.

Questions to answer first

  1. 01Who will manage the SDR or the firm every week?
  2. 02Is there an ICP, a message and a qualification standard in writing?
  3. 03Is the CRM set up to hold the pipeline properly?
  4. 04How many qualified meetings a month can you actually take?
  5. 05What happens to the playbook and the data if you stop?

How GrowAxis helps

GrowBD installs the system either way: ICP, pipeline stages, outreach playbooks and CRM. Your sellers work inside it, or our BD team runs it under your name until your own team takes more of it over. It goes live within 30 days and is measured on pipeline value, qualified meetings, close rate, cycle length and cost of acquisition.
